Species identification decides everything about the treatment plan, so we ask what you saw and where. A half-inch tan roach with two dark stripes behind its head, found in a kitchen at 11 p.m., is a German cockroach — it lives indoors, hides inside cabinet hinges and appliance motors, and a single egg case carries roughly 30 eggs. That biology is why one spray fails: the surviving nymphs mature in weeks and the kitchen looks re-infested by the next month. A large reddish-brown roach an inch and a half long, found in a basement or coming up a floor drain, is an American cockroach that lived outside or in the crawlspace and came in through a gap. Smokybrown roaches — solid mahogany, strong fliers — show up on Varina and Tuckahoe lots with heavy mulch, gutter debris, and stacked firewood near the foundation.

German cockroach work is a program, not a visit, and we say so upfront. We place gel bait in cracks where the roaches already travel, add an insect growth regulator so the surviving nymphs cannot reach breeding age, and set monitors so the count is measurable rather than a guess. Follow-up visits are usually two, spaced two to three weeks apart, matched to the hatch cycle. We do not fog kitchens — broadcast spraying scatters a German population deeper into wall voids and makes the second visit harder. For the outdoor species, the fix is structural: replacing a torn crawlspace door seal on a 1950s Lakeside brick ranch, sealing the sink-drain penetration under a Highland Springs cabinet, screening a foundation vent, and pulling mulch back from the slab in Short Pump and Wyndham where roaches cross from a bed into the garage.
